If you seen him in 500 days of Summer, you will not see him the same way again. I’ve never been a big fan of the Kübler-Ross Model (also known as the Five Stages of Grief) because it seems like something constructed more to comfort those dealing with the grief-stricken rather than an honest explanation of the griever’s emotions. Fortunately, there's enough humor in all this to counteract the exploitation of weird logic and audacious coincidence. Coming Soon, Regal His grandmother, Madeleine (Piper Laurie), drifts on a cloud of vagueness through their lives, feeding them out of lifelong habit, not asserting herself, asking no questions even when T.J. brings Hesher home for dinner. | Top Critics (29) Yet the movie does have a point, and the T.J. character is so sweet and sad that he provides an emotional touchpoint for the viewer. At first he seems possibly an imaginary friend for the kid, but then we realize he's quite real, all right. Writer-director Spencer Susser stages his trials with the immediacy of a just-bloodied nose, and when T.J. gets knocked over for the third or fourth time, you realize Brochu has been right to play the boy with that perpetual look or fearful alertness.

The debut feature from director/co-writer Spencer Susser (who penned the screenplay alongside Animal Kingdom writer/director David Michod), Hesher captures one of those tender, life-altering encounters in a way that’s anything but precious, imbuing it with a refreshing sense of recklessness and compelling stylistic flair that perfectly complements Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s volatile centerpiece performance. His father Paul (Rainn Wilson) is despondent and spends most of his days sleeping the pain away on the couch of T.J.’s grandmother Madeline (Piper Laurie). Their behavior doesn't change throughout the whole movie, so they are one-dimentional. "Hesher" assembles a group of characters who aren't sure why they're in the same movie together. The film's strength relies on the cast, and they all did a terrific job, more likely that of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Accessorized with heinous birth-control glasses and draped in unflattering late-’80s fashions, Portman is still a bit too pretty to be entirely believable as the luckless grocery-store clerk who needs TJ’s affirmations as much as he needs hers, but a bearded Rainn Wilson plays the role of TJ’s father with a sense of detachment that, once shed, lends the film’s off-beat climax a sense of palpable tenderness.
Then the film, which at least had the consistency to hammer home its single theme, shoots itself in the foot with an ending unworthy of its tone and attitude. Hesher does the exact opposite by pulling a stunt so saccharine and contrived that I would assume it came from a studio note if this weren’t an independent film (and also if there was some studio out there that was totally cool with the level of child-endangerment this movie joyfully depicts). PARK CITY -- A movie about loss for audiences who would like to firebomb the Hallmark Channel, Hesher enters with a metal riff and, even when it's time to, can't quite bring itself to go soft.
