I remember being told, perhaps six or seven years ago, that Europeans considered America to have no proper sense of irony. The Willoughbys is a sort of parody of "old fashioned" children's books. I was and am a BIG Lemony Snicket fan. Hmm... As a scholar of 18th and 19th century children's literature, I was immediately drawn to a book purporting to be a parody of "old fashioned" books. We typically read together and the evening we started this book was rough!

I think the satirical aspects of the story may be too subtle for some young readers. The melancholy candy maker tycoon who lives there adopts the baby and his life becomes happy after years of grieving over the death of his wife and son in an avalanche in Switzerland. Adults can read and enjoy this book as well. so many nuances that might be missed by the younger crowd. I picked it up because of the hilarious description, the unique author's bio, and the adorable cover. The writing style is fantastic and fun and interests adults and children. It is my new favorite book. Probably not appreciated by a high schooler but i am 39 and I just finished it and LOVED it.

Two for my personal response, three because I respect what the author is doing.

Grade 4–7—Lois Lowry’s hilarious novel (Houghton Mifflin, 2008) is a parody of “old-fashioned” children’s books and features the requisite uncaring and self-centered parents, orphans, nanny, and the like.

I Would NOT normalize this behavior by having any kids read this trash. This is a children's book (at least, it's shelved that way at my local library) but kids won't get many of the references or humor here, which means that it's really a book for adults masquerading as a children's book. I read it to my children in anticipation of The Willoughbys movie being released on Netflix.
